Dear New Member,
Welcome! No matter how fearful you are, please don’t leave the meeting.
I was so scared to go to my first Al-Anon meeting. I had promised myself that I’d sit in the back of the room and not talk. But when I went into the meeting room, everyone was sitting around a table. The people were friendly and kind, although I was still uneasy.
Sure I cried at the meeting. That was because the members were expressing what I was feeling. The pain and disappointment of living with active alcoholism is unbearable alone.
After the meeting, which was an hour and a half, I received hugs before leaving with plenty of literature and members’ phone numbers. One member called me the next day and she soon became my Sponsor.
The most important message I took home after my first meeting was that I was powerless over alcohol and it wasn’t my fault that my husband drank so much. That was a big weight off my shoulders.

Who are the members of Al-Anon and Alateen?
Al-Anon and Alateen members are people just like you and me–people who have been affected by someone else's drinking. They are parents, children, spouses, partners, brothers, sisters, other family members, friends, employers, employees, and coworkers of alcoholics. No matter
what our specific experience has been we share a common bond: we feel our lives have been affected by someone else's drinking.

Al-Anon at a glance:
Al-Anon is a mutual support group of peers who share their experience in applying the Al-Anon principles to problems related to the effects of a problem drinker in their lives. It is not group therapy and is not led by a counselor or therapist; This support network complements and supports professional treatment.
Alateen is a peer support group for teens who are struggling with the effects of someone else’s problem drinking. Many Alateen groups meet at the same time and location as an Al-Anon group. Alateen meetings are open only to teenagers.
No advance notification or written referral is necessary to attend an Al-Anon or Alateen meeting. Anyone affected by someone else’s drinking is welcome to attend.

About Al-Anon - Get to Know Us

An Al-Anon group meeting, information about Al-Anon

Al-Anon is a worldwide fellowship of people whose lives have been affected by another person’s addiction to alcohol. Membership in Al-Anon is open to relatives and friends of alcoholics; Alateen is a program designed for young people under the age of 21. The basic principle of both groups is that alcoholism is a family disease; those closely involved with alcoholics may suffer psychologically, spiritually and often physically.

Al-Anon is…

  • A Fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who believe their lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking.

  • A Mutual Support program based on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).

  • A Nonprofessional fellowship where members share their experiences, strength, and hope to solve their common problems.

  • A Spiritual program that is compatible with all religious beliefs or none.

  • A program with the Single Purpose of helping families and friends of alcoholics, whether the alcoholic is still drinking or not.

Al-Anon Preamble:

The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope in order to solve their common problems. We believe alcoholism is a family illness, and that changed attitudes can aid recovery. Al-Anon is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, organization, or institution; does not engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any cause. There are no dues for membership. Al-Anon is self-supporting through its own voluntary contributions. Al-Anon has but one purpose: to help families of alcoholics. We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics, and by giving understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic.

Many who come to Al-Anon/Alateen, men and women alike, are in despair, feeling hopeless, unable to believe that things can ever change. We want our lives to be different, but nothing we have done has brought about change. We all come to Al-Anon because we want and need help.
In Al-Anon and Alateen, members share their own experience, strength, and hope with each other. You will meet others who share your feelings and frustrations, if not your exact situation. We come together to learn a better way of life, to find happiness whether the alcoholic is still drinking or not. Al-Anon is for any man, woman or teenager whose life has been affected by someone else's drinking.  The alcoholic/problem drinkers come from all walks of life; young or old, rich or poor, man or woman. Alcoholics are mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, children or grandparents, whose drinking causes pain and fear on all who love them.
